5 Common Myths about Money and God

1. Money, Riches and Achievement will make you happy and fulfilled.
Truth : Money will fulfil our lusts and whet our desires but will not buy the peace, joy and inner strength and calm we need to be fulfilled and at rest.

Micah 6[12] For the rich men thereof are full of violence, and the inhabitants thereof have spoken lies, and their tongue is deceitful in their mouth. [13] Therefore also will I make thee sick in smiting thee, in making thee desolate because of thy sins. [14] Thou shalt eat, but not be satisfied; and thy casting down shall be in the midst of thee; and thou shalt take hold, but shalt not deliver; and that which thou deliverest will I give up to the sword. Riches, pleasures can be obtained but satisfaction is a separate virtue that God must send not necessarily as a consequence of wealth. Ecclesiastes 5[10] He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity. The challenge is that riches promote lusts and desires that steal our hearts from God…and when we love silver we are cursed with never being satisfied and always wanting more…a path that leads to a downward spiral.

2. God gives us what we desire and supplies our wants.
Truth: God gives us what He decides in His unquestionable benevolence to give us for His glory and purpose. True works of God do not lack for funds.

Phillipians 4[18] But I have all, and abound: I am full, having received of Epaphroditus the things which were sent from you, an odour of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, wellpleasing to God. [19] But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Needs are not wants…nor are they desires…Our needs relate more to God’s divine assignments and His purpose for our lives. He wants us to prosper as our soul and destiny prospers. This promise was made to Epaphroditus – a generous giver to Paul’s cause. God’s cause and all who align to provide to it will not lack. God may if He chooses but is not committed to finance our lifestyle expenditures … nor does He have to pay for our vain pursuits.

3. When we give to God – God owes us and we must expect to receive.
Truth: God commands us to give our Tithes, first-fruits and offerings out of love for Him and not as an investment.

Luke 17 [10] So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.We can never repay what God had done and still does for us through our giving of what He gave us in the first place…talk less of turning God to a debtor. The best of us are unprofitable from God’s perspective. He fulfils His word by opening the windows of heaven, causing men to give us and blessing us with increase as we love Him.  It is love of God that God responds to and not debt. Indeed how can we say we love God and argue about giving back to Him in our Tithes, First-fruits and Offerings and to bless others to His glory.

4. Seize the moment…your best life is now so amuse yourself and enjoy life.
Truth: Your best life is certainly not now !

Luke 6 [25] Woe unto you that are full! for ye shall hunger. Woe unto you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep. The Bible is full of pictures that lets us see He saves the best for the last. His Eternity in Heaven is His best. His way is to serve the best wine last…the way of the antichrist is the exact opposite. Eternal damnation is the worst of all worst case scenarios…and it is saved also for the last. Christians are told especially in the end-times to endure … and that it will be worth the wait. The antichrist says there is nothing to wait for so don’t miss out on the joys of the moment at the expense of your soul.

5.We can believe God for harvests we have not sown, God does the impossible.
Truth: God has no limitation – for all the silver and gold in Heaven, Earth, with believers and unbelievers all belong to Him and He gives as He pleases. God does not deny His word on which He asks us to meditate on day and night.

Genesis 8 [22] While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease. God is merciful  – He does not deal with us according to our iniquity but scriptures encourage us to change our seed if we want a different harvest.  We can not sow oranges and hope to harvest bananas.  Our kind words, sacrificial giving, service and industry can be seeds …we must pray God gives increase. Zero multiplied a billion times remains zero. Change your seed and reap a different outcome.

Galations 6[7]  Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. [8]  For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.

God bless you.

A Recession-proof Christmas

Philippians 4[19] But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

3John [7]Because that for his name’s sake they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles.

Psalm 62 [5] My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him.

We are entering the season perhaps few dread because of the traditions and pressures to show love through giving and the hard-to-resist marketing of items and offers for consideration.  Indeed, this is the month that cries spend; spend more and a little bit more.  Give… give more …give a little more.

Christmas celebrationsI often wonder the perspective of Jesus … who as a baby received gifts from wise men…only to become as He grew the ultimate gift poured out to and for all of mankind. God also said the silver and gold is already His and so cannot need what He already has.  I do not want to speculate where the tradition of gifts and seasons celebrations really began as there are hardly scriptural references of saints celebrating birthdays.  Rather ominously – in the Bible, birthday celebrations were mentioned only twice.  Pharaoh’s birthday (Gen. 40:20Gen. 40:20
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

) at which John was beheaded.  I plead to someone reading…do not sabotage your finances or decapitate your future in this period as you seek to make an impression. Inappropriate collections to ministry can also lead to early termination … spiritually initially. Let God finance His work.

It is however a good time to tell people about Jesus and reflect on the approach of Jesus Christ to giving and Bible directions to inform financial decisions.  It is a time to model His ways for the world to see. What would Christ have done differently in this season as He lived the recession-proof life?  For all He needed was indeed provided.  Consider the following seven areas for examples.

1.God does not need your money but needs more of you and your repentant heart.  Be not under pressure to give to ministry if not led by the Spirit of God. Rather pay all your debts – be sure the basic needs of your family, care for parents, wards etc. are covered and seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance to give…Only give joyfully.
2.God is your source, therefore make your financial needs known to Him and do not be dependent on man or be expectant or excited in receiving from men. Do not form the habit of making your needs known to men. Do not leave an obvious hint of your need to the well-dressed neighbour in the church.
3.Be cautious of gifts you receive…never put any under pressure to give or be compelled to accept and consume every gift.  As you seek God’s face in giving, do the same in receiving.  Do not put yourself under undue influence as a result of significant receipts. If it seems very rude to return an inappropriate gift it may be easier to openly redistribute or channel these gifts to a known charity (office gifts are best handled this way…do not be seen taking inappropriate gifts from suppliers home). Remember,  Abram rejected the gift from the King of Sodom. Gen. 14 [22]  And Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lift up mine hand unto the LORD, the most high God, the possessor of heaven and earth, [23]  That I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet, and that I will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich
    4. Never be elated or excited at receiving money /gifts…you may just be a channel and it may not be for your consumption…seek God’s direction.  Similarly do not be upset if you lack or lose money…make your needs known to God.  A gift is often a test…be joyful when you have passed. Christ received from men and ministered His life to all. Do not be a random receiver collecting from those who do not receive your ministry. Be sure you are giving out more even to those you receive from.
5.Never purchase impulsively. Being able to afford an item does not mean you can go ahead to buy it.  Far more good may be done by considering alternative possibilities as God leads you. Do not purchase love with money (true love is not for sale) or pressurise others to spend to prove love.  Most giving can be selfish “investments” in disguise as it expects something directly in return from men….and God stops being your source. Prayerfully plan a budget for the season and adhere to it. Never use credit to show love as you buy gifts, spend to improve lifestyle or to entertain.
6.If in ministry, be cautious not to squander money collected from those poorer than you for your own personal luxurious lifestyle or family leisure use. God hates oppression of the poor. There will be accounts required of us.
7.There are many inexpensive things that are valued and leave far more endearing memories … your time spent with family and loved ones, an apology in a thoughtful note, a five minute call just to show you remember and truly care, rekindling of neglected relationships  e.g. with your teenage daughter, a word of appreciation to your pastor etc…these may cost almost nothing.

Enjoy the season…remember after all they call it Christmas…should we not be most like Christ at this time ?   And one most important thing…when we give as we must – remember we are to be generous to others especially the less privileged and not over-indulge ourselves…

Also, reflect on the following scriptures…

Proverbs 11[25]  The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.

Proverbs 22: [9]  He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; for he giveth of his bread to the poor.

I Timothy 6[8]  And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.

 Have a blessed day. Amen.

How to know if you are serving “mammon”.

Matthew 6[24]  No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

MoneyThere are two warring masters who are distinct in their influence to dominate your life, thoughts and very being.  You cannot be on the fence…indeed one master must be despised if the other reigns.  Christ says we cannot serve both.  He also teaches that we cannot be neutral to these commanding forces…if we are not under one domain by default we are under another.   I have encountered many Christian finance blogs that seem to suggest we can have the best of both worlds but this is not the teaching of Christ.  I have also seen so many great and helpful tools (some on my blog) that help us be financially responsible and often concerned (if we are not careful) that these do not become a new line of “modern toys “ that preoccupy us well. But we eventually miss the point as they do help us to win the urgent money battle only to lose the critical war.  When we put so much focus on money, we are always lured into a romance with an intensely jealous and controlling mistress that will not permit Christ any ground.

How then can we know if we are serving “ mammon”? There are seven (7) simple questions in this blog.  Be certain that for each question you will only be able to hold on to one selection and never both.  If your life leans more to the bold italicised clause then perhaps  you are not in mammon’s grip. Then intercede for the freedom of others …

  1. Is the Word of God on finances/money a pretext (something that is put forward to conceal a true purpose or object; an ostensible reason; excuse…to support or propagate a principle we already elect to embrace) OR  is the Word the main text that drives behaviour (the leading theme that controls our life – even when challenging to your acceptance)?
  2. Are we focused on the situational ethics of money ( right behaviour based on current expectations of society and business culture) OR  are we committed concerning our decisions to the leading of the Holy Spirit of Christ – the interpreter of God’s word especially in the little things the world considers immaterial?
  3. Where are we making friends/spending most our time/forging and leveraging our alliances…and investing our money and efforts? Is it mainly to make more money OR to win souls for Christ and be Christ-like?
  4. Is our concentrated objective the stewardship and discovery of what Christ calls the True Riches OR any kind of riches will do?
  5. Have we been mastered by Godly contentment and ruled by its humbling sceptre OR are we restless and anxious to preserve or achieve a lifestyle that is driven by lusts, passions and irresistible marketing of gadgets and materials?
  6. Do we accept that worldly wealth though not evil in itself has a natural association with sin and can be our god requiring extra care for those who must embrace it OR  do we conclude that we can easily blossom in worldly wealth – drink and be merry.
  7. Have we well addressed in our lives the foolishness of laying up treasures for ourselves here and being uncertain of the state of our eternal bank account – i.e. the state and reality of our eternal dwellings  OR we think eternity will take care of itself, let’s figure out how to pay today’s bill and manage assets and liabilities we can see.

Ephesians 1[7]  In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;

We will find out that Christ is right in that it is deception to conclude that we can be on both sides.. To have Christ reign is a full-time deal demanding full allegiance and devotion.  Similarly to be a servant to mammon is to be under a powerful influence that demands complete, unalloyed, homogenous and undivided attention to its gospel.

This does not mean we cannot be wealthy and be free from mammon. Possessions do not have to be another god. Instead, possessions should be a means of glorifying God and advancing the Kingdom of God – otherwise they will become destructive … eventually.

Ecclesiastes 5:[10]  He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity.

Intelligence in the Recession

These are indeed the days of Elijah where, in famine, God finds His “poor widow of Zarephath” and repositions her for great wealth.

I Kings 17 [14]  For thus saith the LORD God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the LORD sendeth rain upon the earth. [15]  And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did eat many days. [16]  And the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake by Elijah.

Days of Recession can be days of plenty – and days of greater accountability requiring higher disciplines of stewardship. Remember, we have said in earlier posts that all worth – Net or Gross – is of God.  The steward that increased the wealth of God in his hands was commended in the Bible for two basic competences.   Working to increase net worth and giving an account of increase. He knew the exact sum of his gains.

Matthew 25[20]  And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more.

Today, if the question was asked of me, now i’m retired. What would Intelligence in the RecessionI have wanted to do most differently in over 25yrs of my career?  The answer clearly would have been to render better stewardship of that which had been entrusted in my care.  I would have wished to have been better prepared not just in academic grounding but more in learning the disciplines and habits of managing the key assets of time, money, skill and opportunities on behalf of God, the Owner who rewards faithfulness.  In difficult times I have been often been tempted to say like the wicked steward in Matthew 25[24]  ‘Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow and gathering where you scattered no seed. [25]  ‘And I was afraid, and went away and hid your talent in the ground. See, you have what is yours.’ [26]  But his master answered him, You wicked and lazy and idle servant! Did you indeed know that I reap where I have not sowed and gather [grain] where I have not winnowed? [27]  Then you should have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I would have received what was my own with interest. [28]  So take the talent away from him and give it to the one who has the ten talents.

Sometimes I wonder if God would have judged me wicked not for adultery but for hiding away in indolence.  A Preacher said recently at a meeting that it seems the disciplines God commanded are today commonly set aside by saints seeking and presented with instant remedies. Today, perhaps less than 10 % of adult Christian population know their worth talk less of managing increase. Possibly even less ever balanced the family books. It is even more strange the lack of correlation between education and what I have defined as “Lifestyle Intelligence”.  Lifestyle Intelligence (for the purpose of this blog) is the exercise of understanding concerning how we live our lives concerning financial matters. The Bible is full of exact measurements  of weights, volumes and distances..indeed it is a book about numbers. Christians should be equallycomfortable with numbers.

I am thankful that the sudden realisation of potential limitation in the recession has brought out from inside a new lifestyle of accountability and worth management…making me perhaps a much better steward today. First, what are the lessons I would have wanted to have mastered earlier with the tools made available to me.

1.     Expenditures must be much less than earnings and a proportion (after tithes and taxes) of the excess must be hallowed and set apart to increase worth. Saving requires discipline that must be taught and imbibed early, while consumption comes naturally.

2.     Doing nothing is sure to result in decay as assets depreciate and lifestyle consumption swallows worth. Therefore be diligent…apply all the talents God has given . Remember 2 Thessalonians[10] For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat. So get busy. Moses started something at the age of 80 with nothing but a staff and an unstable assistant, Aaron…and God.

3.     Early preparation and training on disciplines to produce an intelligent lifestyle sets the ground for wealth to grow. These disciplines do not emerge by accident or default.

I have introduced in this blog a new page Lifestyle Design where you find tools to begin afresh or just sharpen the saw. The first tool, Christian Lifestyle Intelligence Test is to help review financial habits for alignment with Kingdom culture. An abridged version is shown below.

To use the tool please reflect for a few minutes and answer all 25 questions using a scale of 1 to 5. Please ensure you double-click on the cell after the question to enter your response and scroll down to see total score after ALL questions must have been answered.  Also see the impact of a different answer on your total score.

Key

1.      No, almost never…not even remotely applicable.

2.      Only very rarely…only minimally applicable.

3.      Yes, sometimes, but not frequently…maybe somewhat applicable.

4.      Yes, quite frequently…well, almost my exact situation.

5.      Yes, happens all the time…most applicable…my situation exactly.

Interpretation of Total Christian Lifestyle Intelligence Scores

60 -100            Good, prayerfully make adjustments to be closer to the 100 mark

40-   60            You have many areas to work on, though perhaps above the average

<40                Major adjustments required to approach the contented life

Please go to the Lifestyle Design menu item above for more detailed presentation of how to apply and further analyse your results and also download the full version of the Christian Lifestyle Design Tool.

The second tool is a simple income/expense budgeting/tracking and net worth tool you can use to manage your finances, understand your net worth and track and respond to how it changes. If you are in need of a tool to understand and apply budgeting and net worth concepts you can also download this easy to use  Basic Family-personal Financial model (also featured on the Lifestyle Design menu item). I urge you to consider these tools and if useful commit to their use except of course you are amongst the few already savvy on financial matters. Then please pray for the rest of us.
I Cor 4: [2]  Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.

Recession and The Changing Times

“This year in particular, we see the nations of the world reel under the pressures of collapsed economies. Many people are afraid, deeply troubled and have lost hope for a better future. There seems to be no answers and everything looks bleak. But in Christ, there is hope and this hope maketh not ashamed. We can trust in the unfailing God. His power and might are still the same. As many as put their hope in Him shall never be put to shame (1Peter 2:6r 2:6
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

6 Who will render to every man according to his deeds:

) Behold, I lay in Zion a chief cornerstone, elect, precious, and he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame.” writes Pastor E.A. Adeboye -The Redeemed Christian Church of God – General Overseerin the Aug 2009 Convention Programme.

I recently watched a Christian film I had seen over 5yrs ago… Time Changer. Set in 1890, a Bible Professor Russell Carlisle (D.David Morin) has written a new manuscript, “The Changing Times” and his book is about to receive unanimous endorsement from the board members of the Grace timechangerBible Seminary… until Dr. Norris Anderson (Gavin MacLeod) raises an issue over a “difficulty” he has with something Carlisle has written. Dr. Anderson believes what Carlisle has written could seriously affect the future of coming generations. A manuscript emphasising morals, ethics and values without prominent focus on the Lordship and Salvation of the Lord Jesus Christ who taught those values, would lead to danger and cause more harm in coming generations. Using a secret time machine, Anderson sends Carlisle more than 100 years into the future; offering him a glimpse of where his writing will lead.
Indeed, Carlise travels from 1890 in a Time Machine to the modern day Church to see what the preaching of ethics, leadership and morality…with a subtle de-emphasis of Christ and the Holy Spirit has produced. I wish every Christian will watch and reflect on this film again…Carlisle cannot believe the compromise in almost every aspect of faith covered in a flurry of activities andwonders how “Christians” could be so deceived. He concludes that Dr Anderson is right and revises His manuscript.

Indeed our Lord Jesus Christ said: “Beware of covetousness for a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of what he has.” But more importantly we must be always under Christ’s Lordship doing only whatever the Holy Spirit – The Spirit of Christ -permits in our lives. I suspect the unmentionable variety we see today in Christendom and the ugly debates on family, ethics, marriage and lifestyle issues may have been unheard of if the Lordship of Christ and strict continual direction of the Holy Spirit were fully preserved in all aspects of worship.

Revd. Josiah O. Akindayomi, who started what transformed to become The Redeemed Christian Church of God in 1952, had warned concerning the future of Christianity of two developments. One, the quest and ambition for akindayomiprominence and position and second…focus on money and the love of it. These arise from straying from Christ reigning in us to bowing to other “lords”. It relates also to the natural lack of control of desire which indeed dates back to Ancient Greece and the emergence then of the so called Epicurean philosophy. Even Epicurus himself wrote: “To whom little is not enough nothing is enough. Give me a barley cake and a glass of water and I am ready to rival Zeus for happiness.” But there is hope.

“Even though you may have suffered shame, dishonour, and humiliation in the past, the restoration ahead will be so glorious that you will forget the shame. The pathway to that glorious future can only be found in Christ. When you fully surrender and allow Him to take full control of your life, His glory and power will cause you to burst into songs of joy. Proverbs 23[18] For surely there is an end; and thine expectation shall not be cut off.” writes Pastor E. A. Adeboye again.

Why am I convinced that wealth will come out your ashes as you return to Jesus Christ? Hear the Prophet Isaiah speak of Christ. Isaiah [61:1] The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; [2] To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; [3] To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.

I pray Christ meets with you and reigns in you through this blog and your life filled again with restoration and hope.

Finally, I want to thank all that have sent me messages and Dr Okey Onuzo for his most kind and helpful comments on this blog…and my hat’s off to Pastor I.D. Iluyomade, City of David, for his most generous support of the new book Wealth out of Ashes.

God bless you all and welcome to a great future.
