Better Than Being Blessed

“And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:” (Gen. 12:2Gen. 12:2

). The state of being truly blessed is when you receive blessings with no curses to negate them.

The presence of a curse in one’s blessing can gradually erode all of one’s gains and put that fellow in the same state with the cursed. That shall not be your portion in Jesus name. When you are blessed, not only will your efforts be crowned with great harvest, but lost opportunities will also be restored (Joel 2:23-27Joel 2:23-27
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

23 Be glad then, ye children of Zion, and rejoice in the LORD your God: for he hath given you the former rain moderately, and he will cause to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the latter rain in the first month. the former rain moderately: or, a teacher of righteousness moderately: Heb. according to righteousness 24 And the floors shall be full of wheat, and the fats shall overflow with wine and oil. 25 And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpiller, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you. 26 And ye shall eat in plenty, and be satisfied, and praise the name of the LORD your God, that hath dealt wondrously with you: and my people shall never be ashamed. 27 And ye shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I am the LORD your God, and none else: and my people shall never be ashamed.

). The blessings on the blessed have a way of attracting lost blessings and opportunities. This is why the so-called losses of the blessed are only temporary.

In the process of time, they are recovered. It is my prayer that you will be so blessed to the point of recovering lost opportunities of several years this season. It is so wonderful to be blessed, but being a blessing is far greater. Being blessed is just an addition of blessings to you. On the other hand, being a blessing means you have become the headquarters of blessings—that is, you are so full of it that the blessings you are carrying overflows to others.

In today’s reading, there is a list of seven blessings the Lord gave to Abraham. It is possible that my training as a Mathematician motivated me to scrutinize the arrangement of these blessings. After carefully listing them, I discovered that being a blessing was right at the middle of them all. That is, every other blessing in that passage revolves around it. It is better to be a blessing than being blessed. The one who is a blessing is characterized by an overflow.

If there is no overflow, that person is yet to experience what it means to be a blessing. Let’s take David as an example. In Psalm 23, he listed several blessings of the blessed – no lack, plenty to eat, good sleep, thirst quenched, provision of guidance and direction, restoration of the soul, protection in time of danger, access to provision in the presence of the enemy, being anointed, then cup overflowing.

When your cup overflows, the focus is no longer you but others. If you observe God’s order of blessing His children, you will find out that He first blesses before making the fellow a blessing. The way you handle the blessings is of keen interest to God and it will determine whether you will move to the next level—being a blessing. If you are stingy, tight-fisted or covetous, you may never become a blessing. If money is like god to you, you cannot be a blessing.

Remember… In the life of the blessed, a blessing is a visitor. In the life of the one who is a blessing, a blessing is a permanent resident. Is blessing a visitor or a permanent resident in your life?

YOUR APPOINTED TIME by Pastor E.A. Adeboye (Open Heavens Devotional)

Deut. 33[25] Thy shoes shall be iron and brass; and as thy days, so shall thy strength be”

Habakkuk 2 [2]  And the LORD answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it. They will also pass. Praise God! Are some brethren receiving major breakthroughs now? Rejoice with them. It is their season. Don’t envy them. Yours will come in your season. Your season is God’s appointed time for divine remembrance. Do you know that in your season, your greatness could be far bigger than those you are tempted to envy?

David was in the mountain, watching over sheep. It never dawned on him that he could become the next king. After all, there was no king in his family. He never even desired or prayed for it. But one day, when they were looking for the next king, they came to fetch him from the mountains and anointed him. His day had come. Saul went looking for his father’s missing asses one day – unknown to him, he was to be chosen as king on the same day (1 Sam. 9:1-21 Sam. 9:1-2

Joseph was in prison for an offence he never committed. He was forgotten by Pharaoh’s servant, to whom he had ministered through his ability to interpret dreams. That servant was released. When his day came, without the assistance of anyone, God used the elements of time and chance to move him from prison to the throne.

Your day will come. Your time to eat bread without scarceness will come. Your day of promotion will come. Soon you will carry your baby from your own womb. That day can meet you in church, just as it happened to Zacharias (Luke 1:5-20Luke 1:5-20

5 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth. 6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. 7 And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years. 8 And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course, 9 According to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord. 10 And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense. 11 And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense. 12 And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him. 13 But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. 14 And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth. 15 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb. 16 And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God. 17 And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord. to the wisdom: or, by the wisdom 18 And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years. 19 And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings. 20 And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.

). If he had become discouraged that he was getting old and wondered about the delay, inspite of his faithful service to God, he would have left God’s service and missed his day.

Do not allow anything to discourage you. The blessing may be delayed, yet wait for it, for when the day comes, nobody and nothing can stop that blessing. Stay in God’s will. Continue to serve God faithfully. Keep away from sin. Keep your faith alive. Your day will come sooner than you think.

Thankfully receive the joy coming your way this season. And pray that your joy will not turn into sorrow.

God bless you….as you also enjoy the video below.

Tony Blair, Faith and Globalization … Image Re-engineering as BP names Dudley new CEO

I read an article recently on secrets to happy retirement and “Intellectual curiosity” was listed…” Adults over 70 who choose brain-stimulating hobbies over TV watching are two and a half times less likely to suffer the effects of Alzheimer’s disease, according to Richard Stim and Ralph Warner’s book Retire Happy: What You Can Do Now to Guarantee a Great Retirement. Not only will shunning TV make you happier, it will make you healthier.” I imagine that when intellectual curiosity is mixed with faith issues…it can be an even more potent elixir. Tony Blair dedicates the rest of his life to “rescuing faith from the twin challenges of irrelevance—the idea that religion is no more than an interesting aspect of history—and extremism.”…also adding”Faith is part of our future… and the values it brings with it are an essential part of making globalization work.” Also watch a recent CNN interview of Tony Blair for more context.

Wikipedia defines “Globalization” as a process by which regional economies, societies, and cultures are integrated through global networks of communication, transportation, and trade. The term also refers to transnational circulation of ideas, languages, or popular culture through acculturation.

Groping to find God has a good ring to it and common sense suggests “globalization” is a good pill in economic recession to alleviate poverty, hunger and conflict. However, generous contributions to humanity and helping the cause of God for “spiritual betterment” does remind me of Cornelius in the Book of Acts.

Acts [10:1] There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, [2] a devout man and one who feared God with all his household, who gave alms generously to the people, and prayed to God always. [3] About the ninth hour of the day he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God coming in and saying to him, “Cornelius!” [4] And when he observed him, he was afraid, and said, “What is it, lord?” So he said to him, “Your prayers and your alms have come up for a memorial before God. [5] “Now send men to Joppa, and send for Simon whose surname is Peter. [6] “He is lodging with Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea. He will tell you what you must do.”

Yet, there is a huge gulf of difference between searching, admiring and helping God and God finding and visiting us. When God (through Peter) visited “good” Cornelius see what happened.Acts 10[44] While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word. [45] And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. [46] For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God.

When God visited Paul (then Saul of Tarsus) – one of the most brilliant intellectuals in his time – also on a similar mission to rescue God’s work from “crazy “ beliefs … he was blinded for a while …and then the scales on his eyes eventually fell off Acts 9[18] Immediately there fell from his eyes something like scales, and he received his sight at once; and he arose and was baptized….Everything changed for Paul…He now considered his brilliance, richest gains and reputation as “dung” that he may know Christ – confessing “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain”

Why is Globalization the new threat – even as it offers obvious remedies in Recession?

Job 15[16] How much more abominable and filthy is man, which drinketh iniquity like water? Gen 8 [21] … for the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth …”

Globalization enshrines the goodness of mankind i.e. well meaning people can agree to make the world a better place and have power to do so although brutal world wars, revelations of shocking genocides amongst all race groups and the power of innate selfishness point more at our depravity and human helplessness. Globalization initially may indeed do a lot of good in the hands of gentlemen like Mr Blair…but when eventually abused…it can be catastrophic. The ultimate result will be to make God and faith irrelevant (for only a god that is not truly God will agree to be served and worshipped with others) producing instead a type of modern neo-imperialism – leveraging unequal conditions of economic exchange to enthrone economic, political and technological and military advantage which administers a brand of “good decent governance” on the rest. It also, more worrisomely, will be the prepared medium for modern western thoughts on moral and social issues – notably on life, marriage and rights of religion – to be imposed on “inferior” cultures.

But the greatest inevitable threat is that it creates the ideal setting for the person the Bible calls the “The man of perdition” in 2 Thessalonians to emerge.

2 Thessalonians 2 [1] Now, brethren, concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to Him, we ask you, [2] not to be soon shaken in mind or troubled, either by spirit or by word or by letter, as if from us, as though the day of Christ had come. [3] Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition, [4] who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God. [5] Do you not remember that when I was still with you I told you these things? [6] And now you know what is restraining, that he may be revealed in his own time. [7] For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out of the way. [8] And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming. [9] The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, [10] and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. [11] And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, [12] that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

We already see the falling away (of Christians) … the next event is the emergence of this person.

As I pray God finds His Cornelius and blinds His Sauls … I respectfully suggest that since Blair also warns that Christians must speak out in an aggressive secularist society, he should perhaps embrace more of his “rock and roll” hobby …as a more relaxing pastime in retirement. But then nothing will stop fulfilment of prophecy.  Watch and pray…as you stand fast (Originally published in The Christian Post.) …now to another British Global icon BP.

BP names Dudley as new CEO

I published recently in The Christian Post why BP should not focus only on the path of image laundering … and that replacing the CEO plays the aggressive corporate mogul card rather than the sympathy joker which it needs.  Image laundering suggests more screens will be devised to cover truth…It has already been announced that Dudley is to replace Tony Hayward.

Allow me to repeat again some generally applicable Bible lessons on recovery … and that recovery is indeed possible even in terrible situations. The following are some required elements.

1. Open public admission of wrong and unfeigned repentance/apology – coupled with preparedness to face the implications and not evade or downplay it. Instead of clever self-protection and expensive image laundering administered by PR consultants and lawyers, demonstrate heartfelt sorrow and genuine corporate pain that touches all in contact with BP. The real bitter tears, open regret and readiness to make amends laundered the soiled image of David not PR/image reengineering.

2. Resisting the temptation to dilute accountability by apportioning blame to partners or interests that could be “roped” in.

3. Integrity, honesty and generosity in settling the full bill to alleviate the impact on those adversely affected – even if this seems suicidal to corporate interest. Sympathy can be a very fickle emotion…soon the aggressor becomes its friend. David became a spectacle of sympathy.

4. Planning and expecting to come out but not through a quick-fix “delete” button. There is a new open door hiding in most valleys though only few find it. BP for example can fashion out a new winning paradigm (not PR gimmick) for corporate ethics and responsibility – especially as it relates to environmental protection…truly emerging as a new corporate leader.

What is common in both cases are that both Tony Blair and BP are powerful Global brands … and their thoughts, actions and decisions will affect our lives somehow …

Proverbs  [5]  Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. [6]  In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

God bless you. Amen

Double-dip Recession or the best half for 4 lepers

Peter Morici, a professor at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business, says the likelihood of a double-dip is at least 50 percent. “What’s going to happen here is either the economy is not going to collapse, or it’s going to avalanche. Because once you start cycling down, then it develops a momentum of itself. And if it goes down a second time, then it becomes very difficult to resuscitate [it],” he says in Yahoo Finance article.

For investors, a double-dip, if it materializes, would be a throwback to 2008, with a floundering economy punishing stock returns. Jeff Tjornehoj, Lipper’s research manager for the United States and Canada, says the Dow Jones industrial average could touch 9,000h 9,000

by the close of 2010. “Is it reasonable to expect it? I think it’s reasonable to put some odds on it,” he says.

Nahum 1[9]  What do ye imagine against the LORD? he will make an utter end: affliction shall not rise up the second time.

2 Kings [7:1] Then Elisha said, Hear ye the word of the LORD; Thus saith the LORD, To morrow about this time shall a measure of fine flour be sold for a shekel, and two measures of barley for a shekel, in the gate of Samaria. [2]  Then a lord on whose hand the king leaned answered the man of God, and said, Behold, if the LORD would make windows in heaven, might this thing be? And he said, Behold, thou shalt see it with thine eyes, but shalt not eat thereof. [3]  And there were four leprous men at the entering in of the gate: and they said one to another, Why sit we here until we die? … [18]  And it came to pass as the man of God had spoken to the king, saying, Two measures of barley for a shekel, and a measure of fine flour for a shekel, shall be to morrow about this time in the gate of Samaria: [19]  And that lord answered the man of God, and said, Now, behold, if the LORD should make windows in heaven, might such a thing be? And he said, Behold, thou shalt see it with thine eyes, but shalt not eat thereof. [20]  And so it fell out unto him: for the people trode upon him in the gate, and he died.

As we enter the second half of the year, it remains to be seen if it will be the best half or another record low as a double-dip manifests.

The 4 lepers in 2 Kings did not have much theological background and perhaps never even heard the prophesy of Elisha. They simply came to the conclusion why not do something…if they did nothing they would die anyway.  There is someone reading this blog with an idea, a dream, a new book, a new business, a new plan…and the odds of success seem grim given all the indicators. But consider what would happen if you did nothing.  The difference between the worst case of your new venture and your do-nothing scenario tells you to move forward.

Move forward in the Lord…the flood gates of heaven have opened for you. Enjoy a new beginning. The blood has cleansed you and brought you justified for an overflow of blessings. May you be so extraordinarily blessed in this second half of the year that all who associate with you will also be blessed.  Amen

An area of caution …watch your confession. Your words have consequence.

At a deeper level we see these 4 lepers as unwanted strangers ready to die … they gave their very lives… consider what you could ultimately loose if you do not move in self-sacrifice … Zac Poonen writes on the spirit of sacrifice …

In Ephesians 5:25Ephesians 5:25
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

WP-Bible plugin
, it is written that “Christ loved the church and gave HIMSELF for her”. To build the church, we have to love the church in the same way. It is not enough to give our money or our time. We have to give OURSELVES – our Self-life.

When God wanted to describe His love to man, He could compare His love with only one earthly example – the love of a mother for her newly-born child (See Isaiah 49:15Isaiah 49:15
English: King James Version (1611) - KJV

15 Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee. that...: Heb. from having compassion

WP-Bible plugin
). If you observe a mother, you will see that her love for her baby is full of the spirit of sacrifice. From early morning to late at night and right through the night, a mother sacrifices and sacrifices and sacrifices for her baby. And she gets nothing in return. She endures pain and inconvenience, year after year for her child, joyfully, expecting nothing in return. That is how God loves us too. And that is the nature He wants to impart to us. But it is impossible to find a fellowship anywhere in the world about which it can be honestly said that they all love one another like that.

Most believers know only how to love those who agree with them and who join their group. Their love is human and is far removed from the sacrificial love of mothers!!

Yet Divine love is the goal towards which we should be striving. So each time we sing the above lines, we should not only honestly admit that our love is not yet like that, but also confess our hope and longing that our love will become like that one day.

A mother does not care whether others around her are sacrificing anything for her child or not. She joyfully sacrifices everything herself. In the same way, one who has seen the church as his own baby will not be bothered whether others around him are sacrificing anything for the church or not. He will sacrifice himself joyfully, and he will have NO complaint or demand against anyone else. Those who complain that others are not sacrificing for the sake of the church are not mothers but hired nurses. Such nurses have fixed working hours and will complain when the nurse for the next 8-hour shift does not come on time.

But a mother does not work 8-hour shifts each day. She works a 24-hour shift daily – year after year – and she does not even get paid for it. Even when her child is 20 years old, the mother’s work is not over!! Only mothers can have milk for their babies every day. Nurses cannot produce milk for the babies they care for. In the same way, those who are like mothers in the church will always have a word for their spiritual children – in every meeting. Many elders have no word for the church because they are nurses, not mothers.

A mother does not expect any payment from her children. No child ever pays its mother for her service. In fact, if you were to calculate the wages a mother should be paid, at the rate of Rs.20 per hour (as paid to nurses), you will find that every child owes its mother more than 3 million rupees, by the time it is 20 years old!! Which child can ever repay such an amount to its mother?

Now the question that comes to us is: Who is willing to work like that for the Lord and for His church – without receiving any payment, but giving oneself, day after day, year after year, until Jesus comes? If God can find just one person with that spirit anywhere, He will use him to build the church, much more than He can use 10,000e 10,000

half-hearted believers who try to serve Him without the spirit of sacrifice.  When Jesus returns to earth and you stand before Him, will you have any regrets over the way you lived, or will you will be able to look back over a life spent usefully for the kingdom of God?

Many are drifting along and wasting their lives on earth. Wake up before it is too late, and ask God to show you that His way is the way of sacrifice. He who has ears to hear let him hear.

How to Recession-proof your Business and Position for Recovery (Part I)

I Kings 18: [43]  And said to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up, and looked, and said, There is nothing. And he said, Go again seven times. [44]  And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man’s hand. And he said, Go up, say unto Ahab, Prepare thy chariot , and get thee down, that the rain stop thee not.

ICorinthians 9 [26]  I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air:

These scriptures help to transition to perhaps more down to earth concerns on how we can grow in a Recession from a business perspective and be positioned to be amongst the new winners.  I had devoted more attention in previous posts and my book WEALTH OUT OF ASHES, to the spiritual issues, because it is indeed the spiritual that drives everything else lest we gather our gains in a basket with holes.  This article is the first of seven posts focused primarily on important concepts that businesses growing in times of Recession have mastered.

Immediately, the recession was prophetically announced as over, Elijah commands the servant to go and see and look again even as He prayed.  Refreshing our vision is therefore the first activity because things are not as they used to be and there indeed may be some even permanent changes in the business landscape.  After refreshing our vision, we must execute actions, but not in  haphazard directions.  We need Strategy and Innovation to propel and constrain our actions to produce growth.  Growing businesses also adapt their functional systems to new realities. Let us examine each of these areas as depicted in the diagram summarised as follows:

Refreshing our vision implies the need to pause and relook several times to see the new emerging world and understand newHigh Growth areas of need and business opportunities to target innovation.  We need to refocus our efforts on our core business and rebuild long-term orientation with a new mission and objectives as well as set and share new long/ medium range goals and milestones.

Habakkuk 2[2]  And the LORD answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it. [3]  For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.

Strategy and Innovation is achieved by comprehensively reassessing what has changed in our market, customers, suppliers, inputs, competitors, regulation and consider where we now have new advantages or can innovate to build advantage.  Businesses grow when they master their market and competitive advantage and reposition to exploit these advantages to the fullest. High growth businesses also use flexible structures (instead of old hierarchies) to respond to a more dynamic business environment.

We need new approaches and disciplines.  High growth businesses adapt their systems especially in the areas of how they manage people, and account and manage money.  Businesses that grow despite the Recession invest in more marketing to remain visible when others are cutting down – as this conveys strength.  They use technology more boldly to drive innovation and maintain their competitive edge.  The next post will begin to provide more details.   For the full article you can click – DOWNLOAD ARTICLE.

More on God’s perspective on wealth can be found in my recently published book Wealth out of Ashes .

Have a blessed day.  Amen.

Sustainability

Isaiah 43 [2]  When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.

Recently, I was invited to give a talk on Sustainability. Sustainability is about the inspiration and innovation that creates tomorrow’s value and prosperity. In other words, meeting present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.  In our economies, it is the development and creative mix of, at least, the following four types of capital to produce a sustainable menu.

  • Financial Capital – cash, investments and monetary instruments
  • Manufacturing Capital – infrastructure. Machines, tools and factories
  • Natural Capital – resources, living systems, ecosystems, healthcare
  • Human Capital – Labour and intelligence.

All these work together. Indeed, deficiencies in or excessive focus on one ingredient ruins the meal. Emphasis on financial capital, for example, without enough intervention in human, manufacturing and natural capital Sustainabilityis setting up for future crisis though there are temporary present gains.

Whenever I consider a topic of secular interest, I always want to remind myself that there is always the spiritual dimension which drives earthbound models.

On the spiritual front the Prophet Isaiah declares the word of God on sustainability – presenting divine wisdom in perhaps 3 areas.

  • Survival of trials – The hallmark of sustainability
  • Foolishness – The enemy of sustainability
  • Repentance – The assurance of sustainability.

Survival of trials: Trials are inevitable – and so on the issue of trials, Isaiah uses the word “when” and not “if”.

  • Waters become suddenly deep and drowning threatens but there is a solid ground and Christ leads as seas part. When we get out of our depth, we have Christ to hold on to.  We should expect miraculous interventions
  • Rivers overflow their banks and floods cause others to perish but like Noah, we are in an ark – safe. That ark is Christ. Be convinced of your salvation in Jesus Christ as a false or faked assurance will prove worthless in the floods.
  • Fires (meaning overwhelming destructive forces) rage and we are still not hurt…like the 3 Hebrew boys, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego or Daniel in the Den of Lions, again there is the saving presence of Christ.

Daniel and the 3 Hebrew boys endured and we learn from their character and lifestyle the need for;

  • early piety –  youths need sound and solid teachings and wisdom from early age,
  • devoutness in the closet – we need to prevail in prayer first in private before attempting public exposure,
  • firm decision of character –  we should be determined not to bow to evil, and
  • diligence in business – we ought to excel in our trade by diligent self application and continuous learning.

Foolishness: Naboth lost his vineyard through the schemes of Jezebel, Ahab and sons of Belial in 1Kings 21:9. But why was Naboth hanging out with sons of Belial? Foolishness is refusing consecration to Christ. It is foolish to be unequally yoked with questionable alliances as this only makes us more vulnerable

Repentance: To have the assurance of a better future, we should consider our ways, learn our lessons and stop repeating our misdeeds.  That is why Christ said:

John 5[14] Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.

Will the next recovery be sustainable?  The answer lies perhaps in the quality of our repentance.

Is the Recession over?

This seems to be the question on the lips of many as ears itch for a favourable answer.

I Kings 18[41]  And Elijah said unto Ahab, Get thee up, eat and drink; for there is a sound of abundance of rain. [42]  So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he cast himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees, [43]  And said to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up, and looked, and said, There is nothing. And he said, Go again seven times.

The prophet Elijah declares the Recession is over – though no evidence of this is seen and he commands his servant to go and look again seven times.

Elisha, another prophet of God many years later makes a similar declaration in another famine in 2Kings[7:1]  Then Elisha said, Hear ye the word of the LORD; Thus saith the LORD, Tomorrow about this time shall a measure of fine flour be sold for a shekel, and two measures of barley for a shekel, in the gate of Samaria. [2] Then a lord on whose hand the king leaned answered the man of God, and said, Behold, if the LORD would make windows in heaven, might this thing be? And he said, Behold, thou shalt see it with thine eyes, but shalt not eat thereof.

How will we know when the Recession is over? We will know when God declares it to be so through His word by His prophets.  Will we see signs of improvement and economic indices/indicators getting better suggesting the Recession is about to end?  We may not. However, the sure sign will be the word of God declaring it over.

Will economists, brilliant men and highly rated journals herald the end of Recession?  In the text above, Elijah’s servant saw nothing until seven times he looked.  In the case of Elisha, God used lepers to silence the lords (the economic advisers) of kings.

timemagAgain, the simple question “Is the Recession over?” Time magazine reports in Sept 14, 2009  –  Turning point for the Global Recession?  Perhaps, indeed it is.

We are already beginning to hear God speaking through His prophets. Let the prophets of God, waiting in unknown caves, echo with certainty His word for the moment – and let them mobilise their servants.  Let the lepers (true saints) of today’s post-modern age put the lords of Kings to shame again.

But then, rather than seeking to know if Recession has ended, should we not be more concerned about if we have learnt our lessons.  Have we changed our paradigms and reconstructed our mindsets?  Is our mind renewed by His Spirit?  In other words – are we repentant?  As this recovery develops, hear the Lord Jesus Christ warning the one made whole about a worse thing coming.

John 5[14] Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.

A careful look at the famines described in the book of Kings in the above scriptures reveals that the famine in the time of Elijah was so bad that the widow of Zarephath and her child prepared to die.

1Kings 17[12]  And she said, As the LORD thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.

But the end of that famine saw only an unrepentant Ahab (like most of us anxious to see recovery) going up to eat and drink as indeed the rains were about to fall again. Years later, a very much worse and fearful situation arose in Samaria.  So terrible, that this time women boiled their children.

II Kings 6[29]  So we boiled my son, and did eat him: and I said unto her on the next day, Give thy son, that we may eat him: and she hath hid her son.

Is the Recession over?  For someone who cares it is time to put his face between his knees to seek the face of the Lord and intercede about the future. “Lord, give us grace to completely overhaul our ways that we do not see even worse times in our future”

Nahum 1[9]  What do ye imagine against the LORD? he will make an utter end: affliction shall not rise up the second time.
